Notes for Walkers
Introduction:
My name is blank and I am a Bakersfield City Firefighter and we are out today encouraging support for candidate X for Bakersfield City Council Ward X. Candidate X supports __X__, __X__, __X__ which will improve the quality of life for the citizens of Bakersfield. We are looking for your support of candidate X for Bakersfield City Ward X. (Now give them any handouts and info on the candidate or issue.)
You can ask if they have heard of candidate X. (If they have no knowledge of the candidate or issue this is the time you give them some basic information. Don’t overwhelm them just give one or two examples.)
Ask if they would be willing to support candidate X.
If they express support ask if they would be interested in have a yard sign place in their yard.
Ask if they have any questions about candidate X.
Ask them to carefully look through the information provided.
Urge them to get out and vote on Nov.7th
Thank them for their time and consideration and offer to shake their hand.
What if they ask you about how a canidate X will vote on a specific issue that does not pertain to public safety or local politics?
Let them know that as local firefighters we are not concerned with national agendas of political parties, we are concerned with public safety and infrastructure in Bakersfield. Let them know that we are a non-partisan organization. We support those who vow to make public safety their top priority and canidate X is the candidate for public safety.
Things to Remember:
Be yourself.
Talk about your job and what you do.
If possible try and relate fire safety issues to them. Help them to understand the importance of adequate police and fire personnel. Ask if they have ever needed police and/ or fire help.
If they are not registered voters ask them to go and register to vote so their voice can be heard.
Personalize their experience.
Smile.
Speak with confidence.
